Jays cap season like champions

PULASKI - After the final out of Pulaski Blue Jays' season was converted last night, it was difficult to tell which team was going to the Appalachian League championship series, and which team's season was over.

The Blue Jays, who were mathematically eliminated Sunday, stormed the field after a seemingly pointless game with smiles and high-fives after their 13-0 shelling of the postseason-bound Greeneville Astros. The bad news they received Sunday apparently didn't keep them down for long because their play and their postgame celebration was reminiscent of a team that had just clinched its own spot in the postseason. "Everybody was out there having fun," second baseman Graig Badger said. "Nothing kept our heads down. It was still a positive season and Cat [Manager Gary Cathcart] did a good job of getting that out to us."

Cathcart apparently got that message out to both the hitters and the pitchers. Blue Jays hitters pounded the Astros pitching for 13 runs and the pitching held the powerful Greeneville lineup to four hits.

"We're the kind of team that plays the same way no matter what's going on," Cathcart said. "We've got a lot of talent and when things are going right for us, that's what happens."

Pulaski's hitters scored two runs in the first off Astros starter Brad James. With Yuber Rodriguez on second and Joshua Lex on first, David Hicks doubled just over the center fielder's head.

Left-handed starter Chi Hung Cheng struck out eight batters in five scoreless innings to pick up his fourth victory of the season. Three Pulaski relievers were strong after his departure, allowing just one hit in the final four innings of play.

The Blue Jays added one run in the fourth, three in the sixth, two in the seventh and five in the eight. Pulaski's two biggest innings - in the sixth and eighth - were capped by Jon Ashford and Anthony Garibaldi home runs. Garibaldi finished 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.

With the victory, Pulaski reached the 40-win total for the first time since 2000 when it went 40-28 as a Texas Rangers affiliate. In that year, the Pulaski team also finished in second.

"It's very disappointing to know that we came a little short," Cathcart said. "But that does not take away from what we did this summer. I have a pretty good group of guys, they deserved a chance to go to the playoffs, but they just came up a little short."
