RICHMOND -- Danville businessman Jeffrey Clark will be on the general election ballot in the 5th Congressional District with U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello, D-Albemarle County and Republican challenger Robert Hurt of Chatham.

The state board of elections announced Wednesday that Clark has qualified to be on the ballot as an independent. Clark, who is active in the conservative tea party movement, had said before last week's Republican primary that he would enter the general election as an independent if Hurt got the GOP nomination. But Clark acknowledged he will face financial and logistical challenges trying to compete in a closely watched race.

Two other independent candidates -- Libertarian Stuart Bain of Salem and Jeff Vanke of Roanoke -- have qualified to challenge U.S. Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Roanoke County, in the 6th District. No Democrat will be on the ballot in that race.

Jeremiah Heaton of Washington County will be on the ballot as an independent in the 9th District, joining veteran Democratic Rep. Rick Boucher of Abingdon and Republican Morgan Griffith of Salem, the majority leader in the House of Delegates.
