Three Democrats and one Republican running for Roanoke City Council raised thousands of dollars compared with the hundreds raised by their opponents through March 31.
According to the most recent campaign finance reports filed this week, Democrats Bill Bestpitch, Ray Ferris and David Trinkle each raised more than $5,000 between Feb. 20 and March 31.
Republican Bob Craig raised more than $5,000 between Jan. 1 and March 31.
Meanwhile, independent Carl Cooper and Republicans Mike Powell and Tony Walker raised less than $600 each between Jan. 1 and March 31.
The Democrats had a different filing period than the other candidates because that party held a primary to nominate candidates.
Voters will elect candidates on May 4 to fill three seats on the council.

Realtors' association endorses candidates in area races
The Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors' Board of Directors has endorsed three candidates in the race for Roanoke City Council and two in the race for Salem City Council.
In Roanoke, the board endorsed the Democratic slate of Bill Bestpitch, Ray Ferris and David Trinkle.
In Salem, the board endorsed Wayne Adkins and Randy Foley.
Association President Richard Limroth said the candidates were endorsed based on job creation, budget concerns and the use of vacant or city-owned property.
