Election Day 2009: Full coverage
The Montgomery County School Board will see just one new face joining it in January, as voters chose incumbents Phyllis Albritton in District A and Jamie Bond in District D.
Bond has been on the board since 2005. Albritton has been on the board since 2007, when she was appointed to replace Amy Lythgoe, who resigned. Last year, voters elected her in a special election to carry out the one year remaining in the term.
This will be Albritton's first full term. Tuesday night she said she is "honored and humbled" by the results.
In District C, which will be vacated by David Dunkenberger, no candidate appeared on the ballot. Dunkenberger announced earlier this year he would step down because of time commitments.
Shawsville resident Drema Foster waged a write-in campaign, easily beating the second-place finisher, Curtis Hancock, who earned only five votes.
Registrar Randy Wertz said election judges make the final determination about names misspelled when punched into electronic voting machines.
If a write-in winner were to decline the position, a special election would likely occur in the coming year, Wertz said. In the meantime, the school board would appoint someone on a temporary basis.
In the coming year, the school system is facing a change in leadership at the top.
Board Chairman Wendell Jones said Tuesday the incumbents' return will be an asset during upcoming interviews for a new superintendent.
The board is expected to begin closed-door meetings about hiring for the position next week. A replacement for Tiffany Anderson, who left in June, is expected to be named by the end of the year.
