Two former members of the Roanoke City Council have endorsed Republican Douglas Walker, who is running for commissioner of the revenue.

Bev Fitzpatrick and Brenda McDaniel endorsed Walker over Democratic incumbent Sherman Holland, according to a news release Wednesday.

Fitzpatrick is a Democrat who's been on and off the council since the 1980s. He most recently ran last year, when he lost in a firehouse primary. He now serves as director of the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

McDaniel was appointed to the council in 2004 to fill the unexpired term of Nelson Harris, who had been elected mayor. She considered herself an independent.

According to the release, Fitzpatrick and McDaniel are supporting Walker because he's promised to allow a municipal audit of the commissioner's office.

Holland has been commissioner of the revenue since 1997, after he defeated then-commissioner Marsha Compton Fielder in a Democratic primary. One of the big issues then was Fielder's refusal to allow a municipal audit. Holland has also allowed a municipal audit, but after one raised issues about efficiencies of his office, he questioned the audit's intent and whether it is allowable.
