RICHMOND -- Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Roanoke County, said Tuesday that the House of Representatives should stop dwelling on the controversy surrounding another Republican congressman's outburst at President Obama and "get on with discussing the important issues that are before the country."

Goodlatte and other members of the state's Republican congressional delegation were asked in a conference call about the House reprimand of Republican Joe Wilson of South Carolina.

"I think we all agree that this was not an appropriate statement, but it was certainly something that he very promptly apologized to the president for" Goodlatte said. "The president accepted his apology. It's time to move on."

Goodlatte noted that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi initially indicated last week that she, too, wanted to move past the controversy.

"But apparently there are some elements in her party that want to perpetuate this rather than do exactly what all of us want to do ... and that is to get on with discussing the important issues that are before our country," said Goodlatte, who participated in the call to discuss issues in the Virginia governor's race.
