President Obama will make his first foray into the Virginia governor's race next month when he campaigns with Democrat Creigh Deeds at an event in Northern Virginia.
Obama will appear at a public event and private fundraiser with Deeds on Aug. 6 in McLean, just outside of Washington, Deeds' campaign said Thursday.
Obama last fall became the first Democrat in 44 years to carry Virginia in a presidential election, and the governor's race is being viewed as an early test of public support for the president's party. Deeds is facing Republican Bob McDonnell, the former attorney general.
National political organizations already are pumping large sums of money into the Virginia race, underscoring the stakes.
Outgoing Gov. Tim Kaine is serving as Obama's handpicked chairman of the Democratic National Committee and is expected to direct ample national party money to Deeds.
Obama's visit will not be the first White House involvement in the contest. Vice President Biden headlined a private fundraiser for Deeds last week in Richmond.
