Unemployment funds remain an issue

Somewhere in Washington there is $125 million set aside for out-of-work Virginians. But the wisdom of taking that money has become a growing election-year issue.

On Monday, a trio of local Democrats hammered on state Republicans, along with gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell, for opposing the federal unemployment assistance.

State Sen. John Edwards of Roanoke, Roanoke County Supervisor Charlotte Moore and Roanoke County Sheriff Gerald Holt gathered in the parking lot of the Roanoke Workforce Center, declaring it "foolish" and "short-sighted" to oppose the stimulus dollars.

Last month, the Republican-controlled House of Delegates rejected Gov. Tim Kaine's plan to expand unemployment benefits -- a prerequisite for Virginia to get the funds.

Monday's visit was part of the Democrat-backed "Stand Up for Virginia Tour," which is carrying a petition around the state this week.

It was the second time that party members had visited the employment office in as many weeks, getting plenty of mileage -- if not traction -- out of the $125 million question.

Last week, McDonnell urged members of Virginia's congressional delegation to amend the recovery act so Virginia could get the unemployment funds without expanding eligibility for benefits.

Republicans and state business groups have argued that an expansion would be deemed as permanent when the one-time federal assistance expires -- and that would result in increased taxes on businesses.
