Tom Perriello talks to the media

Democrat Tom Perriello continues to prepare for what he believes will be his first congressional term as the state board of elections is still more than a week away from certifying the vote in the close 5th Congressional District election.

Perriello met with members of his transition team Friday in Danville.

"With the scope of challenges facing the 5th District, we don't have any time to lose in getting to work," he said.

Headed by former U.S. Rep. L.F. Payne, the Perriello transition team, which will likely grow in numbers in coming days, includes Beverly Brewer, director of Brunswick County Department of Social Services; the Rev. Larry Campbell, member of Danville City Council; Hank Davis, member of the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors; Chris Dowdy, business leader in Farmville; Carl Eggleston, business leader in Prince Edward County; Catherine Maloney, business leader in Charlotte County; Kimble Reynolds, former mayor of Martinsville; Christian Rickers, chairman of the Lunenburg County Democratic Committee; state Del. Shannon Valentine, D-Lynchburg; and Linwood Wright, former mayor of Danville.

Perriello has also announced that he'll be in Washington for a weeklong orientation starting Sunday for new members of Congress.

Perriello, of Albemarle County, currently has a 745-vote lead over U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode, R-Rocky Mount, a margin that would give Goode the option of asking for a recount.

The state board of elections is scheduled to officially certify the vote on Nov. 24, and Goode will then have 10 days to decide if he'll request a recount.

Goode could also contest the election, a separate process under Virginia law.

Goode, then a Democrat, was elected to Congress in 1996 to succeed Payne.

Goode has said that the Nov. 7 declaration of victory by Perriello is premature.
