Two prominent retired military veterans will promote Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's national security agenda today at a town hall-style meeting in Roanoke.
Retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Claudia Kennedy and retired U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. John Estrada will lead a 12:45 p.m. meeting at the Total Action Against Poverty community room at 145 Campbell Ave. S.W. The Roanoke event is the first of five town hall meetings the pair will hold in Virginia this weekend.
The retired veterans will discuss Obama's plans for ending the Iraq war, handling the war in Afghanistan and combating terrorism, among other things.
Kennedy is the first female to reach the rank of three-star general in the Army and had 31 years of military experience when she retired in 2000. Estrada is the second black person to hold the position of sergeant major of the Marine Corps. He retired last year after 34 years of service that included duty in Iraq.

Perriello plugs poll, despite 13-point deficit
Democratic congressional challenger Tom Perriello is still 13 points behind U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode, R-Rocky Mount, according a Survey USA poll conducted for WDBJ-7 and released this week. However, the Perriello campaign says it's pumped because that's more than a 20 percent gain since a similar poll in August.
Perriello is attempting to unseat Goode, who has won re-election easily since winning his initial race for Congress in 1996.
The latest poll sets up a main question in the race: Can Perriello cut into Goode's support in the rural parts of his 5th Congressional District, which stretches from Charlottesville to Franklin County.
