Republican Congressman Bob Goodlatte of Roanoke County and Democratic challenger Sam Rasoul are set to square off Monday in their first debate.
The one-hour candidates' forum starts at 7 p.m. in the William Byrd High School auditorium. It is hosted by the Roanoke County Council of PTAs, and questions will be submitted by PTA presidents and board members, according to a news release.
Rasoul had been pressing Goodlatte for a debate since the summer. In one incident, Goodlatte declined to participate in a YouTube debate with Rasoul because the Web site collecting questions was operated by Rasoul's campaign.
On Labor Day, Goodlatte said he would debate Rasoul once Congress adjourned, which happened Friday.
Not invited to the debate was independent candidate Janice Lee Allen.
"Rasoul is not happy with me," said Allen, who participated in a candidates' forum with Rasoul last month. "I would be more than happy to go, but I have not been invited."
