RICHMOND -- Candidates in Virginia's 2009 statewide races offered a glimpse of the financial support they are attracting for campaigns that won't kick into high gear until next year.
Attorney General Bob McDonnell, a Republican, ended June with the largest cash balance of the three candidates running for governor, reporting $1.2 million in available funds. McDonnell raised more than $818,000 for his gubernatorial bid during the first six months of the year, according to a report filed with state Board of Elections.
Del. Brian Moran, D-Alexandria, reported raising nearly $1.4 million, including $450,000 transferred from a campaign committee that he controls. State Sen. Creigh Deeds, D-Bath County, who will battle Moran for the Democratic nomination, brought in more than $782,000. Moran reported a cash balance of about $924,000 to about $650,000 for Deeds.
Because of their current elected positions, all three gubernatorial hopefuls were prohibited from raising campaign cash while the General Assembly was in session.
Two Republicans running to succeed McDonnell as attorney general have raised more than $100,000. Former U.S. Attorney John Brownlee of Roanoke County raised more than $103,000, even though he didn't announce his candidacy until May 20. State Sen. Ken Cuccinelli of Fairfax County, meanwhile, brought in more than $129,000 since announcing March 31, including $42,000 transferred from an existing political account. A third GOP candidate, David Foster of Arlington, raised about $35,000.
Democratic Del. Steve Shannon of Fairfax County, a likely candidate for attorney general, raised nearly $298,000 between Jan. 1 and June 30.
Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, a Republican, reported more than $443,000 in contributions for the first half of the year and transferred another $360,000 from his political action committee. Bolling has a cash balance of nearly $665,000.
Democratic candidate Jon Bowerbank of Russell County reported more than $226,000 in contributions, almost entirely from his own funds.
