Kaine to speak at Radford school

RICHMOND -- Gov. Tim Kaine will hold a town hall-style meeting at Radford University on Wednesday to promote the transportation funding plan he has proposed for a June 23 special session of the General Assembly.

The public meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Bonnie Hurlburt Student Center Auditorium on the Radford campus. Kaine is holding public meetings throughout Virginia to lay out his plan for addressing a highway maintenance funding shortfall that is draining dollars from the state's road construction budget. He also wants to generate revenue for mass transit and for transportation needs in the traffic-choked regions of Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads.

Kaine last month called for increases in the sales tax on vehicles, the grantor's tax on home sales and vehicle registration fees to generate new transportation revenue. The governor's plan also calls for regional sales tax increases in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads.

Staff from the Unclaimed Property Division of the state Department of Treasury also will be at Wednesday's meeting to help people check for any stocks, bonds, dividends, utility deposits, insurance proceeds and tangible property being held by the state.
