Bedford Humane Society buys shelter land

The Bedford Humane Society's planned limited-admission, no-kill animal adoption center will be located on a 3.3-acre parcel of land on Old Turnpike Drive, site of the former Bedford County Girl's Home. A preliminary site plan for a 6,000-square-foot animal shelter was approved by the City of Bedford before the acquisition.

"This has been the Society's dream since our formation in 1993," said Doreen Ehasz, executive director. "Our adoption center will serve to relieve some capacity problems at the overburdened, tax-funded county animal shelter through the sheltering of homeless animals. However, it will also serve as a community resource for current and future programs."

The property purchase was made possible by a bequest from the late Vernon D Lybolt Jr., whose name the center will bear. Bedford Humane Society member, Karin Baldwin, REALTOR with RE/MAX 1st Olympic, Lynchburg, helped find and close on the property and donated her entire commission of $7,590. Attorney David Whitehurst, a long-time supporter of the Humane Society, donated his services at a substantially reduced rate.

Interest earned on the Lybolt estate funds since their receipt in 2007 also helped fund the purchase.
