Humane Society program pairs cats, farmers
PETS
The Franklin County Humane Society's Barn Cat Buddies is a new program designed to help feral and semi-friendly cats who are not adoptable as house cats and are at risk of being euthanized.
Barn Cat Buddies is targeting horse and dairy farms where rodents destroy expensive grain and feed by breaking into bags and exposing the food to feces and disease. What starts out as a nuisance can quickly turn into a health issue as the rodents multiply.
Barnyard cats can help by acting as rodent-control technicians, taking care of the problem without toxic chemicals. They work for free in exchange for room and board. What also makes this program so appealing is that all Barn Cats come to their new digs fully sterilized, vaccinated and are free to farm owners who are willing to follow an easy but common sense barn cat protocol.
If you own a barn or farm and are willing to accept a pair of Barn Cat technicians, please call The Franklin County Humane Society at (540) 489-3491 and ask for Diane or Heather. You may also request a copy of a Barn Cat Buddies flyer and the protocol when you call.
