Recent columns

A trio of Smith Mountain Lake-based striper fishermen fared well in the National Striped Bass Association's season-ending championship at Cherokee Lake in Tennessee.

Fishing in the association's Gold Cup series championship, the team captained by fishing guide Dwayne Lamb of Wirtz finished third.

Kenny Short, another lake guide, was fifth in the three-day tournament. Short's teammate and wife, Linda, ended up third in the series' Lady Angler of the Year standings.

A team captained by Rex Smith of Union Hall also fished in the Gold Cup finals.

During the first two days of the event he sacrificed his own fishing time to help a fellow competitor. The man's outdoor motor was broken so Smith offered to tow the angler to and from his fishing area each day.

That cost Smith about an hour of fishing time per day, but he still managed to make the top 15 to advance to the final day of fishing.

On that big day Smith wasn't rewarded for his good will.

As he neared his fishing area teammate Skip Taliaferro turned to him with a question.

"He said, 'You did bring the rods, right?'" Smith said.

Running back to the dock to get the rods cost the team two hours. They caught one striper and finished 13th.
