Outdoors calendar


Jan. 23 Birding: The Roanoke Valley Bird Club will host a field trip to various Botetourt County habitats. The trip will feature a little walking and participants should be prepared for cold weather. Guests are welcome for the free event, which starts with an 8 a.m. rendezvous at the Bojangles at Botetourt Commons Mall. For more information, call club trip chairman Bob Miller at 797-0462.

Jan. 30 Hunting: Virginia's squirrel season is winding to a end, coming to a close on this day. The daily limit is six squirrels, with some species-specific rules that vary by county. More information is available at www.huntfishva.com.

Feb. 3 Running: Fleet Feet Sports will host an orientation meeting for the 2010 No Boundaries 5K training program at 7:15 p.m. The program, which costs $75, is intended to help participants run or walk their first 5K at the Gallop for the Greenways on May 8. The program includes coaching, training plans, special training clinics, and weekly group runs/walks. Feb. 13 Birding: The Roanoke Valley Bird Club will host its annual raptor count throughout the region. Participants are rewarded a point for each hawk spotted. It's not a serious competition but bragging rights are at stake. Non-club members are welcome to participate. For more details contact count coordinator Anne Tucker at 721-1573.
