Registrations are being taken for the slate of shooting and archery contests affiliated with this summer's Subway Commonwealth Games.

Additional information, including registration forms, is available online at www.commonwealthgames.org.

Archery

The Archery division will feature three days of shooting, July 19-21, at Green Hill Park. July 19 will feature a 900 round and a Genesis Round.

The July 20 and 21 FITA Tournament will be held using the NAA Star FITA format.

The entry fee is $28 for one day; $43 for two days or $52 for three days, with reduced fees for shooters under 18. On-site registration will not be taken.

3D Archery

Sherwood Archery Club in Roanoke County will, as usual, serve as the host for the 3D tournament. The dates are July 27-28.

The course will feature 30 life-size targets at ranges out to 45 yards. Shotgun starts will be held both days, starting at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $25 per shooter through July 7, increasing to $30 thereafter.

Fifteen classes, including for youth and traditional gear shooters, will be offered.

Biathlon

This is a summertime take on a traditional wintertime sport, combining shooting with running (instead of Nordic skiing).

Competitors will run a 5K, stopping at the Mile 1 and Mile 2 points to shoot five shots at metal knock-down targets. Each miss will require a 100-yard running penalty.

The entry fee for the July 13 competition, which will be held at Roanoke Rifle and Revolver Club, is $35.

High power rifle

This July 20 match at the Roanoke Rifle and Revolver Club will feature an 80-round match contested at a range of 300 yards.

There will be a Service Rifle class, a Match Rifle class and an Optical Rifle (tactical) class, with calibers up to .338 allowed.

The entry fee is $25.

Black powder rifle silhouette

To be held July 21 at the Roanoke Rifle and Revolver C Range, this match will feature contests at ranges of 200 meters, 300 meters, 385 meters and 500 yards. The general entry fee is $12, plus a $10 fee for each specific match.

Muzzleloader

This July 20 event at Roanoke Rifle and Revolver Club will feature three matches: A black powder rifle silhouette shoot; a black powder rifle target match; and a black powder pistol target match.

The general entry fee is $12, with an additional fee of $7 for the rifle silhouette match, $8 for the rifle target match and $5 for the pistol match.

Fleet Feet hosting speed nights; track meet

In response to requests from area runners seeking group speed workouts, Fleet Feet Sports has announced it will host a four-week track workout series in July.

The Summer Speed Series will feature weekly workouts on Wednesday evenings at the Patrick Henry High School Track.

The practices start Wednesday.

On July 31, the final Wednesday of the month, the series will finish up with a track meet featuring 800, 1,600 and 5,000 meter runs, along with a 1,600 relay. Men's and women's divisions will be offered.

The track meet entry fee is $5 for runners 18 and older; free for younger runners. Proceeds benefit the Patrick Henry cross country and track teams.

The weekly workouts, which start at 6 p.m. and at which Fleet Feet will provide water and Nuun, are free and open to runners of all ages.

Runners are asked to carry identification and to come to the workouts with an idea of their goal time for a 5K race.
