For many springs, the Horticulture Department at Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke has invited consumers of all ages to get loaded with information to help them in the upcoming growing season. Mini-classes, also called “seminars”, meet for only a portion of the usual college semester at times when working people and retirees can come.
Here are details about two seminars that will be available in mid spring. John Arbogast will be teaching the seminar on lawn care.
Course title- LAWN CARE (1 college credit)
Class ID – 66854; Course Department, Number, Section - HRT 198-N8
Introduces essential fundamentals of turfgrass selection, culture, fertilization, effect of soils on lawns, pest control, establishment, and other lawn maintenance tasks. Examines alternatives to commercial lawn fertilizers and pesticides often used in lawn care .

Get to know many of our beautiful Blue Ridge wildflowers and learn how to grow them in your own home garden. Slide presentations and field trips will be used to introduce this diverse selection of native flora. Please note schedule for course meetings below.

These seminars are designed to meet the needs of both home gardeners and professional horticulturists. They are offered on a “pass/fail” (NO TESTS) basis and meet two hours per week for eight weeks or three hours per week for five weeks. Special session seminars will meet as indicated. To register, stop by the Virginia Western Admissions Office; tuition for each seminar is $72.74.
