Moomaw fish stocked as always; they're just not biting

BILL: Has the stocking of trout in Lake Moomaw been decreased? I noticed I didn’t catch as many small trout as you usually do in late May and June. I think the abundance of baitfish could stand more trout. Is there a Web site I can go to and find out this type of information?

J.C.: There have been no major changes in the number of trout stocked in Lake Moomaw, according to Department of Game and Inland Fisheries fish biologist Paul Bugas.
“We have been stocking 25,000 brown trout and 25,000 rainbow trout into Moomaw for years,” Bugas told me. “Some years we stock a few more, some a few less, but the 50,000 total request has not wavered. We stock advanced fingerlings, 7 inches long, in the winter to avoid predation from bass and perch and other species.”
There is some general information on Lake Moomaw on the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Web site. Access Fishing, then Lakes, then Moomaw.

BILL: Re. the recipe for batter to deep-fry striped bass (last week’s Cochran Field Reports). Why do I have to use seasoned flour? Can’t I do my own? You should add some Cajun seasoning to the recipe, not much, just a pinch.
