The life of Lefty

BILL: Some time ago you wrote that the great fly caster Lefty Kreh hurt himself when he fell from a casting platform during a fishing show. How is Lefty doing?
R.J.
R.J.: “Lefty is OK on level but still having trouble on steps,” Bob Hutchinson told me. Hutchinson is the former outdoor writer for the Virginian-Pilot and is a special friend of Kreh.
Kreh’s friends, pupils and disciples recently honored him in Annapolis, Md., at a $250 per ticket event titled “Celebrating Lefty: A Lifetime of Conservation.” The 80-plus-year-old angler and author was toasted by angling personalities including Bob Clouser, Bob Popovics, C. Boyd Pfeiffer, D.L. Goddard and Hutchinson.
Kreh’s speech was: “Like Mark Antony told Cleopatra when he came into her tent: ‘I ain’t here to make no speech.’”
Kreh’s adventurous life is depicted in a new book titled “All the Best: Celebrating Lefty Kreh." It is written by his friend and fellow angler Flip Pallot.
Another new book, titled “Casting with Lefty Kreh” is one Kreh wrote himself and has received high praise from many, including outdoor writer King Montgomery who said: “This is the finest, most comprehensive and best illustrated book on fly casting ever written.”
