Clear-headed view of Bath County's Bigfoot

BILL: I had to chuckle at the Bigfoot piece in your mailbag (last week). I checked the Virginia Bigfoot website to see if any had been spotted in my old stomping grounds of Bath County. I couldn't find any records of sightings there. I must admit that I was a bit relieved. I get a certain comfort in knowing that my old Bath County pals still living there have stopped drinking and no longer are seeing creatures in the night and other oddities.
When I was growing up, there was a well known story about an old timer who saw a gorilla along the banks of Back Creek near Mountain Grove while walking home late at night after an evening with friends. It was a wonderful tale for a young kid. The story involved alcohol and the old timer “walking on water” across Back Creek to the safety of his home.
At that time, I knew nothing about the effects of alcohol or walking on water. I soon uncovered the joys of the former and actually saw what I believed to be hairy-upright
creatures. Only later did I discover they were relatives of my wife. To those that are seeing Bigfoot, I say, “lay off the hooch.”
