Chasing blues, snappers, crows

BILL: I was reading a fishing report that said snapper and taylor bluefish are being caught in the lower Chesapeake Bay. What is the difference between the two?

M.R.

M.R. The snapper blue is a juvenile fish generally 7-9 inches long and has a deeper and flatter body than the more rounded adult fish. The taylor blue is the next size up from the snapper. There is a third category often used for large bluefish, and that is jumbo blues.

BILL: Are crows considered a federal migratory bird and if so do I need a HIP number to hunt them?

J.H.

J.H.: Crows are a federally regulated migratory species; however, a HIP number is not required to hunt them. You do have to abide by season dates, which are Aug. 18-March 15 on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday only. The season on national forest land is Sept. 1-March 10, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday only.
