BILL:
I have heard mentioned this year a saltwater “Grand Slam.” Just exactly what is it?
W.T.
W.T.: A Chesapeake Bay Grand Slam consists of catching a citation black drum, red drum and cobia during a single 24-hour outing. It is a most challenging fete. I am not aware of any Grand Slams this season; however, a couple of anglers have been close. Glen Morris, a Chesapeake orthodontist, nearly pulled it off by catching and releasing citation black and red drum, but the cobia he landed came up short of qualifying for a citation.
The Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament established the Grand Slam in the early 1990s. While a few anglers initially qualified, success in recent years has fallen off.
