Fish stories

BILL: Lot of talk about this fish kill in the Upper James, but I have not seen any signs down this way (Scottsville). We had a 21-incher yesterday. Caught about 20 fish in about 5 hours.

All fish look healthy with some nice fat bellies that make them look like footballs. I have also seen lots of fry in the water which leads me to believe there was a good spawn as well.

Most fish were caught on plastics with some on spinnerbaits and crankbaits.

brown trout

BILL: My cousin was recently fishing on the Jackson River between Lake Moomaw and Hidden Valley. He told me he caught a nice brook trout and e-mailed me a picture, as seen here. But when I compared his picture to those of other bookies it looks a bit different. Is it possible this fish is a brown or possibly a hybrid such as a Tiger trout?

MIDDLETON HIRSH

MIDDLETON: I showed this picture to Larry Moah, a fisheries biologist with the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. He says it is a brown trout. Browns are frequently stocked in the region. The Tiger trout pretty well are gone, Moah said.
