Targeting and feeding

BILL:

I have been watching a mature turkey gobbler that has no beard. Would it be a legal target?

J.E.

J.E.: The law says you may take “bearded turkeys only” and does not say anything about the gender of the bird. So a tom with no beard would not be a legal target. A hen with a beard, however, is legal game.

BILL: For several years I have planted a wildlife food plot about this time of the year. But does the new law that prohibits feeding wildlife keep me from continuing this tradition?

R.S.

R.S.: Not at all. Plantings of any type are legal; in fact, they are encouraged by wildlife officials in order to provide food and cover for wildlife. The new regulation, that became law last year, makes it illegal to place or distribute food, salt or minerals to feed or attract deer from Sept. 1-Jan. 6 statewide. It works this way: you can plant an apple tree and let the deer feed on its fruit, but you can not disperse a basket of apples to attract deer.
