The recent commentary lamenting the lack of compromise in Congress (“Seeking the political center,” Sept. 20) danced around the causes of the problem.
Most of the mischief comes from the House of Representatives, where the majority of the representatives come from safe districts, i.e. districts that have been gerrymandered: drawn in bizarre shapes to ensure their party will be elected forever. By doing so, we end up with government by a minority of extremists who have no need to compromise.
Our only really democratically elected politicians are senators, who are elected on a statewide basis and better represent the majority in the middle than the gerrymandered House members. The politicians haven’t yet figured how to gerrymander the whole state.
The extreme wing of the Republican Party is mainly comprised of members of the tea party, a creation of the Koch brothers, who have an agenda to dismantle our government from the right. It is doubtful the tea partyers realize they are being manipulated to do their bidding.
