Clarification: The original headline, "The poor just don't want to work," was not Watson's, but written by an editor. He says his remarks were not directed at the poor.
Re: “Conservatives are implacable foes,” June 16 letter:
Sage Bassett has it all wrong in quoting John Stuart Mill, “that most stupid people are conservative.” The “stupid” people in this country are those who will not be responsible for their own actions and refuse to take advantage of the wonderful opportunities offered to them.
They refuse to work for their livelihood or contribute to our republic. Probably their hardest activity is going to the mailbox to get their check each month. Fifty percent of people pay no federal income taxes, yet they expect the other 50 percent to support them, in addition to paying the cost of running our country.
When Bassett and the other liberals finally manage to take away everything from responsible conservatives and all who have worked and saved for their future, our country will be torn apart by people who find no check in their mailbox.
During the Great Depression, there was a saying, “There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch.” Somebody has to pay. The Bible says if you don’t work, you don’t eat. President Obama’s nanny state is a complete failure.
