It is with great sadness that I read about the recent passing of Coach Rudy Dillard from William Fleming High School (“Longtime track coach dies at 66,” Aug. 7 news story).
My son was a track athlete a few years ago, and I witnessed firsthand the kindness and love Coach Dillard showed at every track meet.
He would come with food and drinks for his team to make sure that no child was without lunch and water throughout the day.
Each child was treated the same and encouraged to do his or her best. That is all he asked of them.
When my son was choosing a college, Coach Dillard spoke with my husband and me about his concerns for Adam, and gave his opinion about schools he was considering.
He also was always a smiling face at the Commonwealth Games every year, joking with our family.
He will truly be missed by a lot of people in the community. What a fine example he was.
