Re: your editorial “Missed opportunity,” July 26:
I watched the first gubernatorial debate and realized that candidate Terry McAuliffe will use Gov. Bob McDonnell’s current problems against candidate Ken Cuccinelli. That, combined with the community disquiet on the matter, makes me support your position.
Gifts, including sizable ones, are one thing, but questionable loans are another. The governor should have done, and could do, more. By remaining in office, he is doing a disservice to his party, Cuccinelli and the people of Virginia.
Given his able management, over time McDonnell could repair his image and possibly return to office. He could make an arrangement with Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, who has been behaving like a spoiled child over a race he left. That would allow Cuccinelli to assume office.
Attorney General Cuccinelli has the vision, drive and ideas to be a great governor. His name appears on the ballot this November. He is capable of dual duty and could continue to run his campaign.
