I recently returned to my home in Lexington from New York after an absence of several years. Curious to see what was going on in Roanoke these days, last Saturday evening I went to the civic center to see the Southwest Virginia Ballet performance of “Romeo and Juliet.”
The entire production was, frankly, far beyond what I expected.
The vital and lyrical choreography, evocative sets, simple and beautiful costumes — added to the quality of the dancing — made for a delightful and moving experience.
I’m one of those Shakespeare fans who hopes against hope that Juliet will wake up in time, just this once. By the end of the performance, I wish I’d brought some extra tissues.
Kudos to artistic director Pedro Szalay. If this is indicative of his work, I look forward to seeing more of it — and to bringing Lexington friends down to Roanoke to see it, too.
