What fun reading Linda Hopkins' tribute to the 1973 Belmont Stakes winner Secretariat ("Some are born great," April 27 commentary).
June 9 will mark the 40th anniversary of this great Triple Crown racehorse, also known as Big Red. My uncles Jimmy and Charlie would have been in Elmont, N.Y., at this race, if they weren't upstate attending my wedding.
It seems like it was only yesterday that many of the guests were in my parents' living room surrounding the television set. And so the third and final race of the day came. The track was dry, and the race was quick. History was made for Big Red, I was Mrs. Woods, and my uncles were big winners, too.
It is said that rainfall on your wedding day brings one good luck. I, too, will celebrate an anniversary on June 9. My good fortune is my husband, our health, grown children and young grandchildren. Watching the movie "Secretariat" and toasting this great day is all the gift I need. Maybe rainfall will be in the forecast.
