Re: Tim Lilley's response to the April 4 editorial cartoon. ("The first explorers weren't takers," April 12 letter):
The explorers were takers, much more so than illegal immigrants.
Ponce de Leon didn't care that the land he claimed for Spain was already occupied. He viewed the Native Americans as an inferior species.
Most explorers were motivated by greed. The acts of illegal immigrants are out of desperation for a decent life, something most of us can't even pretend to understand.
Living in America is like winning the lottery, however much we complain sometimes. We were given the right to live here when we came from our respective countries. (Unless you're a Native American.) We should give freely to others the right to be as safe and happy as we are.
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Doesn't this apply to everyone?
