Check out the zoo’s special events
Recently, my husband and I enjoyed a late Sunday afternoon visit to Mill Mountain Zoo.
Surrounded by lush vegetation and an array of varied wildlife exhibits, we grooved to the tunes of Project 4 with neighbors and new acquaintances.
What a wonderful way to wind down a weekend by attending “MuZic on the Mountain,” a summer concert series offered by MMZ.
Yet we were truly puzzled by the low attendance. Where was Roanoke? Not at this event, for sure.
What a missed opportunity to enjoy connecting with Mother Nature, fellow visitors, even one’s self. After all, it’s not every day one gets to bring out his or her inner child by riding an open-air train, the legendary Zoo-Choo.
The sudden appearance of a 7-foot black snake, one not part of the zoo’s exhibit, heightened the evening’s drama.
Please visit mmzoo.org and click on Events. Learn about a fabulous way to have fun and support Roanoke’s sweet alpine gem, Mill Mountain Zoo.

Calif. can show us how to collect money
Re: “Millions in fines owed to various localities,” July 15 news story:
Perhaps we need a state law similar to one California has (or, at least, used to have) that the original fine has a date by which it has to be paid.
If not paid, the fine doubles.
Every 30 days, it doubles until paid, or it becomes a felony, at which time a warrant for arrest is issued.
If you live out of state, California will try to have you extradited.
A friend of mine in Albuquerque, N.M., got a parking ticket in Los Angeles while driving a rental, and figured he didn’t really need to pay it.
The fine finally became a felony, and he received notice that a warrant had been issued and extradition proceedings had started.
He paid the fine real quick.
