Making a bad bottleneck worse
Where do Roanoke’s traffic engineers get their degrees and ideas? The roughly three-block area of Elm Avenue in front of the old Community Hospital is the city’s largest traffic bottleneck.
In their infinite wisdom (or ignorance; you choose), they have chosen to create more of a bottleneck by reducing the number of outbound lanes from the area.
They are placing a median where there was a traffic lane before.
If they decided to do this to speed the flow of traffic through this area or if they did it to encourage people to avoid this area, then they are ignorant about the city’s traffic patterns. Between Orange Avenue and Roanoke Memorial, there is no other way to travel between Northeast or Southeast and Southwest without being caught at railroad crossings or traveling several miles out of the way.
Walnut Avenue where it meets Jefferson Street is the only way to cross between those sections of town without encountering trains. Fire, police and EMS personnel even force their way through this bottleneck on emergency runs because they, too, know that a train will likely be encountered.
This is a brazenly dumb idea.

Whacking the county over the weeds
Do the top brass at the Roanoke County Administration Building really care about this community? If they do, then they probably don’t drive Virginia 419 anytime during their day.
The medians have weeds (I should call it sawgrass now) that are 3 feet high and growing. It’s disgraceful. It looks terrible.
This is what visitors to this area see first. This is what our local citizens have to view every day.
What in the world are our taxpayers’ dollars going for?
Why are our county leaders doing nothing?
I don’t want to hear crying about VDOT.
Just hire a local landscaper to do the job. It’s that simple.
It’s your community. Take some pride, my gosh.
