50 years, still no consolidation
I was amused by the "Looking Back" feature for the year 1963 in the April 1 (2013) edition. The last item was that a citizens' study committee had reported that consolidation or merger of the four Roanoke Valley governments was "necessary and inevitable."
Evidently they were wrong, because after 50 years there are still four Roanoke Valley governments with even more redundancy, bureaucratic waste and inefficient application of revenue. The only conclusion is that special interests plus politicians combined with job security of government employees trump "necessary and inevitable."
In addition, local identity is still a huge factor in this area, and although Roanoke and Roanoke County could probably agree in concept over time and Vinton's unique issues could be addressed, Salem would have to be taken by military force.
A right to defend with whatever it takes
Re: "Guns and skunks," March 24 commentary:
Linda Hopkins has a great future in creative writing. I honestly enjoyed her commentary, but thanks to a "radical group of white men," we have the right to write most anything and defend that right with most anything.
In the 1700s, freedom, period, was radical to the world. Government and education have advanced a lot by way of their radical amendment process.
No one else had a constitution. Our Founding Fathers were educated better in the 3R's than many students today.
The Second Amendment, written in the English of the time, may appear disjointed to some, but has served us well since men had cannons in the front yard.
Hopkins allows for freedom of religion clearly, as the nation was founded on and dedicated to God's law of behavior. This, too, served us well until recently. Indeed, Mother Nature is still violent and lawless. Hopefully, man will never worship nature, and defenseless mankind will use inborn reason and ingenuity for protection of God-given rights like defense with whatever it takes to survive.
