'Recess' by any name means halting work
Some members of Congress want to rename their recesses "district work periods."
Congress has a lot of unusual names for things, e.g., they call their inability to reach a budget the "sequester."
It comes from the Latin word sequestrare, which means to remove or separate - like Congress is sequestered from reality.
Congress itself comes from the Latin word congressus, which means "meeting."
Ego makes them entitled to a job with great pay and benefits, even though they don't meet.
Come on, people, we can stand together
I'm an independent and have voted for Republican candidates, although sparsely. I like the libertarian philosophy, but also understand government has a role in civilization. We need law and order, and we need social safety nets.
I'm idealistic at heart but pragmatic by brain. I truly believe in free enterprise but know the government - federal, state and even local - has become an economic engine too big to fail.
We the people of the United States are much bigger and have never seen failure as an option. We cannot fail and still stand. And I know we must stand together.
I feel most still want to stand together, although our hopes together seem diminished. We have always disagreed with each other, like every family. But we are a family. I wish we could acknowledge that sometimes.
We can solve any problem, real or media-manufactured, with common sense and mild concessions on every point. Our politicians thrive on our division. And the for-profit media wouldn't have it any other way.
