We were ready to write off the Salem Red Sox midway through the season. By July 30, heading into the final stretch, their record stood at 51-56. Then the baseball gods smiled. Where it began, we can’t begin to knowin’. But then we know it was growin’ strong.
The superstitious, and there’s plenty of them to be found in the stands and in the dugouts, might peg the magic to the particular way a guy wipes the sweat from his brow, if his socks are in or out, the precision of practice swings before stepping up . . . rituals, all. The only things that count, the things that carried the Sox to 30 wins and just eight losses through the remainder of the season and flawlessly through the playoffs to the sweet Carolina championship win, were these: talent and management that made the most of it.
We congratulate the Sox on their spectacular season, one not seen in 12 years. Unlike the Sept. 10, 2001 win, the celebration abruptly terminated, we join Sox fans in relishing this victory.
