Debra Ann Powell Walsh was born in Roanoke, to the late Jean Delle Galloway Powell and Leon Francella Powell on July 29, 1950. She departed this life on Sunday, December 29, 2013, in Virginia Beach. Debra was affectionately known as "Debbie", "Deb" and "Rally" by those who knew and loved her. Debbie accepted Christ at a young age and became a member of Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She graduated in 1968, from Lucy Addison High School and matriculated at Knoxville College in Knoxville, Tenn. She was a member of the United States Army Reserves for many years. Debbie worked at ITT in Roanoke, prior to moving to New York City in 1982. While living in New York, Debbie met and married, Eugene Gabriel Walsh. She was employed at New York Life Insurance Company and New York University prior to becoming disabled.
She was a very loving and giving individual that always had a kind word of encouragement to share. Debbie followed in her mother's legacy of giving and and service to others. Fond memories of her will be forever etched in our hearts.
Along with her mother, Debbie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Eugene Gabriel Walsh and grandmothers, Pearl S. Galloway and Grace A. Powell. Those left to cherish her memory and continue her legacy of love and giving are her two devoted sisters, Brenda (Richard) Quarles and De'Vera (Bonnie) Powell; her nephews and niece of whom she considered her children, Auntonio (Tony) (Tiffany) Quarles; Rashida (Argentine) Mitchell and Richard Alexander (Alex) Quarles; great-nephews and great-nieces, Lexus and Derek Quarles, Chance and Karsyn Mitchell, Chariah Hendricks (O'neil) and Curria Johnson; uncles, Dennis (Jean) Galloway and Donald Powell; aunts, Vera Galloway, Mattie Powell, Delores (Richard) Lipscomb, Geraldine Hurt, Michelle Powell and Jean Lightbourn; brother-in-law, Delano (Audrey) Walsh; a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, January 2, 2014, in the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel with the Rev. Charles Whitfield officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. There will be no public viewing on Wednesday.
