With an NIE classroom subscription, you gain access to more than 20 curriculum supplements that are specially designed and correlated for the needs of Virginia students and teachers. With a full-school-year subscription (40 weeks), you may choose five of these supplements for your class. With partial-school-year subscriptions, you may choose two.

How They Work
To view additional supplements available through NIE, visit the other school level sections of this website and click on ‘Curriculum Supplements’.

The number of different supplements you can receive varies depending on the length of your NIE subscription. When you order a title, you’ll receive a copy for each of your students, plus a master/teacher copy.
Please note: supplements are sent on your request – you choose what topics fit best with your lesson plans.

Elementary School Supplements include:

Ancient Mali: An Empire Remembered • 1st - 4th grades(Available on CD only)
Explore the ancient empire of Mali. Includes oral history and storytelling, trading and bartering, geography, climate, wildlife, people and artistry.

5th Grade SOL Success • 5th grade (Available on CD only)
Fifth grade standards in math, social studies, science, and language arts are all covered using creative, fun, and hands-on learning activities integrated with the newspaper. (SOL-Correlated)

Fundamentals for Elementary Students • K - 5th grades (Available on CD only)
Teach basic competencies to elementary students by focusing on skill development in language arts, math, science and social studies.

Using The Roanoke Times to Teach Enrichment • 4th - 5th grades (Available on CD only
Designed for students in gifted education programs who need more advanced educational stimulation; uses the newspaper for analyzing, evaluating, comparing and contrasting information. Activities are organized by section of the paper and designed for independent and self-directed completion by individual students.

Geography in the News • 5th grade
Teach students how to use The Roanoke Times to analyze current events from locations around the globe. (Great to use during Geography Awareness Month in November!)

It’s NIE for K-3 • K - 3rd grades
Introduce the newspaper to primary-age children through 76 activities that focus on important subjects like language arts, writing, social studies, science, health and math.

Let’s Write • 3rd - 5th grades (Available on CD only
Teaches practical and creative writing using a variety of newspaper-related activities.

MATH RULES! • 3rd - 5th grades
Use the newspaper as a unique opportunity to learn averages, ranges, percentages, Roman numerals, graphing, division, multiplication, fractions, currency and the metric system. (Great to show students how math is applicable to real-life situations!)

The Civil War Revisited • 4th - 5th grades
Review the “War Between the States” through topics such as camp life, ethnic backgrounds of soldiers who fought the war, and the Battle of Gettysburg. (PLEASE NOTE: Available on CD only.)

Using The Roanoke Times & Graphic Organizers to Develop
Language Arts Skills • 3rd - 5th grades (Available on CD only)

Provide students with graphic organizers assist them in learning grammar, comprehension, phonics and vocabulary, and give students an alternate way to approach reading. (SOL-Correlated)

Stress the importance of character development with topics such as cooperation, fairness, honesty and respect.
