The Edge: By Students, For Students!

The Edge is a newspaper page for teens, produced by teens, that runs every Wednesday during the school year on the back of the Extra section. High school students from around the area compile all the stories, artwork and photographs––with the assistance of professional journalists from The Roanoke Times––to provide readers with a variety of teenage perspectives.

The NIE program provides local high schools with over 2,000 newspapers on Wednesdays, so work by students in their own schools can be brought into the classroom.

In 2004, The Newspaper Association of America (NAA) named The Edge winner of the 2004 Rookie of the Year Award in its youth content division of the Program Excellence Awards. According to NAA, its youth content division “recognizes efforts that engage young people in creating youth-oriented content for newspapers in lasting, meaningful and original ways.”
