Newspaper In Education (NIE) is a community literacy and learning program that partners businesses and individuals with local schools to provide newspapers to students and valuable resources like SOL-correlated activities to teachers.

During the last school year, teachers in the Roanoke and New River Valleys and across southwest Virginia used the daily newspaper as a dynamic textbook, reinforcing educational basics by providing real world examples to their students.

Teachers participating in The Roanoke Times NIE program not only teach about newspapers, they teach with newspapers.

The newspaper is the most up-to-date textbook available, providing daily lessons in geography, math, science, social studies, language arts, and more. Utilizing generous sponsorships from local businesses and individuals, we can provide teachers at all levels—from kindergarten to adult education—with tools to not only advance their mission to successfully educate their students, but to motivate those students to connect with the world.
