Perry is appointed acting sheriff

MARTINSVILLE -- Capt. Lane Perry will serve as Henry County's acting sheriff following the retirement of Frank Cassell, who faces federal charges in a scheme to sell drugs seized from criminals.

Circuit Judge David Williams appointed Perry to the post Tuesday. The Henry County Board of Supervisors will conduct a special meeting today to discuss the timing of a special election for Cassell's successor.

After his indictment last month, Cassell indicated that he would take an unpaid leave of absence. Many county officials urged him to resign, and Monday his attorneys issued a written statement saying that Cassell was retiring effective immediately.
