Festival "Local Colors" 2013

El proximo 18 de mayo Roanoke podrá una vez más disfrutar de la alegría y la belleza de uno de los festivales favoritos de Virginia: "Local Colors".

Este festival es reconocido por sus deliciosas comidas, e interesantes espectáculos culturales, que incluyen vestimentas típicas de las diferentes culturas del mundo.

Este es el festival de las culturas y comunidades que coexisten en Roanoke, las que cada año se reúnen en Elmwood Park desde las 11 de la mañana hasta las cinco de la tarde. El festival 2013 marcará su celebración número 23. Además de su festival, "Local Colors" realiza programas a través del año, promoviendo la diversidad, y el conocimiento cultural.

Trabajando con escuelas, el comercio, agencias gubernamentales y otros tipos de organizaciones, "Local Colors" logra hacer que se reconozca el valor de las innumerables etnias que han transformado Roanoke en su propio hogar.

Como en años anteriores se ha elegido un país al cual se le rendirá homenaje, este año le ha correspondido a Italia.

Las celebraciones se iniciarán con el tradicional desfile de las naciones, para continuar con música, bailes tradicionales, y la participación de artistas de Corea y Polinesia, además de la Compañía de Ballet del Sur Este de Virginia, y el Coro de la Opera de Roanoke.

Uno de las atracciones del festival 2013 será Yesid Plata, un reconocido guitarrista colombiano, el cual fue recibido calurosamente en el Festival Latino 2012. Lo que sabemos de Yesid Plata, es que su conocimiento y dedicación a la música se extiende desde los años de su infancia, dedicación que lo ha llevado a importante presentaciones.

Como músico altamente reconocido, ha tenido la oportunidad de presentarse en festivales, interpretar su música junto a una orquesta sinfónica, e invitaciones a programas televisivos en donde ha actuado como solista, y también como parte de ensambles musicales.

Es de hacer notar que su sencillez en el escenario contrasta con la complejidad de sus interpretaciones, las cuales cubren el norte y sur del continente.

Al referirse a la historia de su música, Yesid Plata solo alcanza a decir "soy un auto didacta de la música", y ya sus pensamientos están de regreso en Colombia, recordando días en que le fue difícil iniciarse en la música.

Sin lugar a duda Yesid Plata tiene un amplio camino que recorrer; estamos seguros que su música tiene un brillante futuro, y así lo deja saber su guitarra.

Yesid Plata permanecerá con nosotros hasta el mes julio, participando en festivales, fiestas privadas, y ofreciendo clases de guitarra.

On Saturday, May 18th, Roanoke will once again experience the joys of a favorite festival: Local Colors.

The smells of delicious foods, the interesting events and entertainment, the colorful clothing from many cultures, and the coming together of Roanoke's diverse communities will take place in Elmwood Park from 11 am until 5 pm.

2013 marks the 23rd year of this celebration and the organization Local Colors has programs all year to promote cultural understanding and diversity.

Working with schools, businesses, neighborhoods, government agencies and many other organizations, Local Colors recognizes the value of the many ethnicities that make Roanoke their home.

Admission to the festival is free and the featured country this year is Italy.

Some of the activities include an international parade, live music and dancing, performers from Korea, Polynesia, as well as the Ballet Company of southwest Virginia and the Opera Roanoke choir.

One of the things we know about Yesid is that his knowledge and dedication to music began in his early years, and has resulted in many important performances. As a musician he is highly regarded, and he has had the opportunity to perform at festivals, with symphonies, and on television programs, both as a solo artist and with several groups.

Yesid's easygoing style on stage contrasts with the complexity of his interpretations and arrangements, which encompass both North and South American music.

When he speaks of the history of his music, Yesid says: "I am a self-taught musician" and when he remembers, his thoughts go back to Colombia, as he recalls how hard it was to become a musician.

Without a doubt, Yesid has an open road ahead, and his music surely has a brilliant future as the sounds of his guitar reveal. Yesid will be in the area playing at concerts, festivals, private parties, and teaching guitar lessons and workshops from May through July.
