Blue Ridge Literacy: aprender  o enseñar

Blue Ridge Literacy es una organización sin fines de lucro que entrega sus servicios en el Valle de Roanoke y sus áreas colindantes. Su misión es alfabetizar adultos en el idioma inglés, e incrementar conciencia acerca de lo relacionado con esta materia, para lo que cuenta con 120 tutores voluntarios, instructores, y estudiantes que están realizando su práctica.

Esta organización que en el pasado reciente era conocida como Literacy Volunteers of Roanoke, y que hoy lleva el nombre de Blue Ridge Literacy, ha estado permanentemente expandiendo sus cursos; por una parte ofreciendo tutoría en Inglés Como Segundo Lenguaje, ayudando en los estudios para el examen "GED", o el examen que se requiere para obtener la nacionalidad. Literacy Volunteers of Roanoke fue creada en 1985 por 2 bibliotecarias, principalmente en respuesta a la innumerables consultas que las bibliotecas estaban recibiendo en relación a servicios de alfabetización.

De acuerdo a lo expresado por la Directora Ejecutiva de Blue Ridge Literacy, Russ Merritt: "Esta ha sido siempre una organización excepcional, realizando un trabajo muy especial para mucha gente que necesita nuestros servicios...nuestro nuevo nombre, y nuestra nueva imagen capta el apasionante espíritu acerca de lo que somos, lo que nos ayudará a relatar la historia de la alfabetización en una forma mejor, a la que hemos logrado anteriormente". Las oficinas de Blue Ridge Literacy están ubicadas en el tercer piso de la Biblioteca Central de Roanoke, ubicada en el número 706 de la calle South Jefferson, en el centro de la ciudad. Las horas de atención se extienden desde las 10 de la mañana a 5 de la tarde, de lunes a viernes. Usted puede llamar al número telefónico indicado, y hacer una cita.

Este servicio es completamente confidencial y su información no será compartida sin su previa autorización. El costo del registro es de $20 dólares, y solo se solicita una vez. Blue Ridge Literacy realiza eventos cada año, entre los cuales se encuentra una competencia de deletreo, un picnic, y un torneo de scrabble (juego de palabras en un tablero). Este año el torneo se celebrará el día 14 de marzo.

Blue Ridge Literacy is a non-profit organization that serves the Roanoke Valley and surrounding areas. Their mission is to teach English literacy skills to adults in this area and to increase awareness of literacy issues with the assistance of more than 120 volunteer tutors, instructors, and interns. Formerly known as Literacy Volunteers of Roanoke, Blue Ridge Literacy has been expanding their courses and offer tutoring in English as a Second Language as well as preparation for GED tests and citizenship tests. Two librarians created the organization in 1985 in response to the many inquiries the library received about assistance with reading skills. According to the Executive Director of Blue Ridge Literacy, Russ Merritt: "This has always been an outstanding organization, doing very special work for a lot of people who need our services ... our new name and new image capture the exciting spirit of what we are all about, and should help us tell the literacy story better than we ever have before." The office is located in the Roanoke City Main Library (third floor) at 706 South Jefferson Street in downtown Roanoke. You may call the above number to make an appointment and you will be asked about your goals and when you would be available to meet with a tutor. This is a confidential service and your information will not be shared without your permission; there is a one-time fee of $20. Blue Ridge Literacy holds events each year, including a spelling bee, a celebration and recognition picnic, and a scrabble tournament. The scrabble tournament, a fundraiser, is scheduled for Thursday, March 14th.
