Summary: A review of President Obama’s inaugural address.

El presidente Obama en el discurso inaugural de su segundo periodo presidencial el 21 de enero se refirió a lo que espera alcanzar durante los próximos 4 años como presidente de los Estados Unidos de Norte America.

El mandatario en parte de su mensaje a la nación describió lo que significa ser un (norte)americano y, de que manera la prosperidad y la libertad dependen del trabajo conjunto, en beneficio de todos: “Sin embargo, siempre hemos entendido que cuando los tiempos cambian, nosotros también tenemos que hacerlo; que la fidelidad a nuestros principios fundamentales requiere nuevas respuestas a nuevos retos; que preservar nuestras libertades individuales eventualmente requiere una acción colectiva.”

Posteriormente indicó que muchas de las tareas que debemos realizar en conjunto, incluyen: la educación, la defensa del país, el cuidado de los ancianos, la construcción de caminos y obras de infraestructura, el asistir a nuestros vecinos cuando enfrentamos desastres naturales, detener la violencia a mamo armada, y preparar a los trabajadores para nuevos y más modernos tipos de trabajos.

El Presidente Obama actualmente enfrenta un congreso férreamente dividido en sectores partidarios; la idea que los norteamericanos se aíslen en grupos cuyos intereses son totalmente opuestos a otros sectores es algo a lo que el Presidente Obama se opone rotundamente: “… rechazamos la opinión de que Estados Unidos debe escoger entre cuidar a la generación que edificó este país, o invertir en la generación que construirá su futuro… No creemos que la libertad está reservada para los afortunados, o para unos pocos de este país”.

Algunas de las prioridades que el presidente indicó al inicio de su nuevo mandato incluyen: una reforma de inmigración, el desarrollo de nuevos recursos de energía de buena calidad ambiental, tomar en consideración los cambios climáticos que están ocurriendo, la igualdad de derechos para los hombres y mujeres homosexuales, la igualdad de salario para las mujeres, e invertir en la educación.

Refiriéndose a los inmigrantes que han venido y permanecen en los Estados Unidos, el Presidente Obama declaró: “Nuestro recorrido no estará completo hasta que encontremos una manera mejor de recibir a los inmigrantes esforzados y esperanzados que todavía ven a los Estados Unidos como el país de las oportunidades; (aplausos) hasta que los jóvenes estudiantes e ingenieros más brillantes entren a formar parte de nuestra fuerza laboral, en lugar de que se les expulse de nuestro país”.

En relación a la política externa del país el Presidente Obama se refirió al terrorismo señalando: “Seguiremos demostrando el valor de intentar resolver pacíficamente nuestras diferencias con otras naciones”.

Esperamos que el Presidente Barack Obama pueda encontrar la manera, la valentía, y la sabiduría para poder resolver los complejos y difíciles obstáculos que se le presenten en los años venideros.

President Obama’s Second Term

President Obama gave his inaugural address on January 21st and spoke of what he hopes to achieve in his second term as president of the United States. He described what it means to be an American and how prosperity and freedom depend on our working together for the good of all the people. “We have always understood that when times change, so must we . . . preserving our individual freedoms ultimately requires collective action” the President stated. He mentioned the many tasks that we must do together such as education, providing for the defense of the country, caring for the elderly and the poor, building roads and other infrastructure, aiding our neighbors during natural disasters, stopping gun violence, and retraining workers for new jobs. The President faces a Congress that is bitterly partisan, but rejected the idea that Americans can be split into groups whose interests are opposed to one another. He said that it is not a choice “between caring for the generation that built this country and investing in the generation that will build its future . . . we do not believe that in this country freedom is reserved for the lucky, or happiness for the few.” Some of the priorities that the President discussed included immigration reform, developing new sources of clean energy and addressing climate change, equal rights for gays and lesbians, equal pay for women, and investing in education. When speaking of immigrants coming to the United States, the President had these words: “Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity; until bright young students and engineers are enlisted in our workforce rather than expelled from our country.” In regards to foreign policy and terrorism, the President said: “we will show the courage to try and resolve our differences with other nations peacefully.” May the President find the courage and wisdom to successfully deal with these complex and difficult challenges in the coming years.
