FERC grants water variance

Appalachian Power has received an extended variance to release less water from the Smith Mountain Project into the Staunton River. The variance, granted by Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, allows Appalachian to release a minimum average outlfow of 400 cfs, rather than 650 cfs.

The outflow will be increased beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturdays through 8 p.m. on Sundays to 650 cfs. If the water level at Smith Mountain Lake drops below 792 feet, the recreational release will only take place on Saturdays. If it drops below 791.5 feet, no recreational releases will be provided.

According to the amendment, the variance will continue until Smith Mountain Lake reaches full pond, or 795 feet.

Comments, motions to intervene and protests regarding the variance musts be filed by Oct. 24. Comments (an original and eight copies) can be mailed to: Kimberly D. Bose, Secretary, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, 888 First St. NE, Washington, D.C. 20426. Alternately, comments can be filed electronically at www.ferc.gov. All comments must include the project number: P-2210.
