A Moneta man died Wednesday morning after he fell while working on a construction project, Bedford County officials said.

Capt. Mike Miller of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office said the incident occurred about 8:10 a.m. near White House and Moneta roads.

He said Donald Lee Patrick, 51, was on a scaffolding about 12 feet off the ground and was caulking pipes when he fell.

Patrick died while being taken to Bedford Memorial Hospital, Miller said, adding that a medical examiner will perform an autopsy.

Miller said Patrick was employed by Riverside Plumbing and that Wednesday was his first day on the job.
