Monday, January 28, 2008Fire destroys condos in Bedford Co.A fire early Saturday morning destroyed four condominium homes and damaged two more in Bedford County. The blaze was reported about 8 a.m. at a six-unit structure at the Waterways, a community in Huddleston, said Eric Morgan, chief of the Saunders Volunteer Fire Department. He said several other companies from around the county also helped fight the fire, using water drawn from the lake by boats and brought in by fire trucks. Morgan said it took about three hours to get the fire under control and no one was injured. Four of the units were destroyed by the fire and a fifth unit sustained significant damage, totaling what he believed was approximately $3 million. The sixth unit had moderate damage, he said. "All six units were vacation homes and only one of the homes was occupied at the time," said Joseph Moyer, the treasurer and a board member of the Waterways Property Owners Association. Only "two people were in one of the units, but they got out early" and weren't injured, he said. The fire, Moyer said, "could've caught [ignited] buildings on either side of it as well. The fire company prevented it from spreading to either side. "We've never had anything of this magnitude." The fire remains under investigation. |
