Monday, October 15, 20076 hurt in 3-vehicle crash in MonetaOfficials said that despite the violence of the accident, no one suffered serious injury.Six people received medical treatment following a three-vehicle collision Friday night in Moneta, Virginia State Police reported. According to Trooper David Martin, the crash was touched off about 6 p.m. when the 17-year-old male driver of a 2002 Ford Explorer ran a stop sign at the intersection of Radford Church Road and White House Road (Virginia 608). Martin said the Explorer, which also carried a 17-year-old female passenger, was struck by a 1998 GMC pickup truck pulling a 40-foot travel trailer. "A witness said the Ford Explorer spun three times and landed on its wheels off the road on the opposite shoulder," he said. The trailer behind the GMC kept going. "You might say it passed the truck, flipped over and took the truck with it," Martin said. The still-moving trailer, he said, then struck a 1995 Honda that was slowing down at the scene. The Honda was knocked backward by the impact. The pickup's occupants, Willie and Vickie Cooke of Lynchburg, were taken to Bedford Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released, Martin said. Martin said the Honda was driven by Bettie Cerul of Hardy; her husband, Thomas Cerul, the only passenger in the vehicle, was first taken to Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital in Rocky Mount and then transferred to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Hospital spokesman Eric Earnhart said Sunday night that Cerul had been released. Bettie Cerul left the scene with friends but, Martin said, was later taken to a hospital after complaining of chest pains. He did not know the name of the hospital where she was treated. Martin said the two teenagers, who are not being identified because of their age, were taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and were treated and released. Charges are pending. "Miraculously, the GMC T-boned the Explorer right between the front and the rear doors," Martin said. "It hit a place that very commonly just kills them right then and there. It could've very easily been four or five fatalities." Fortunately, he added, "Everybody had air bags and everybody was wearing seat belts." |
